On Nov. 28, 2017, at about 9 p.m., Nampa Police officers were dispatched to a reported shooting in the 1600 block of West Lava Avenue. It was reported that someone had been shot at that location.

Police officers arrived on scene and found a 37-year-old male who had fled the residence. He had some minor injuries to his hand that were not caused by a firearm. He advised that the male inside of the residence had threatened him with a firearm and had shot the gun inside of the home. While officers were on scene, they heard gunshots coming from inside the residence.

The Nampa Police Special Operations Group responded to the area. Nampa Police Tactical Response Team officers secured the outside of the residence and officers evacuated surrounding residents. Negotiators contacted the male in the residence and he was identified as 61-year-old, Sammie Hurlbut. Gunshots from within the residence continued to be heard during this time. It did not appear that Hurlbut was firing at officers and nobody else was inside of the residence.

At approximately 1:06 a.m., Hurlbut agreed to come out of the house peacefully. He exited the residence and was placed into custody by officers without incident. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries and then was transported to the Canyon County Jail. Hurlbut was charged with aggravated assault, a felony, and discharging a firearm within the city limits, a misdemeanor.

Hurlbut was involved in a similar incident on March 3, 2016, in the 1400 block of West Lava Avenue. At that time, he had been shooting his firearm in the backyard of a residence. He was charged with exhibition or use of a deadly weapon for that incident.
