On October 16, 2023, at 2:17 a.m. Nampa Dispatch received a 911 call from an adult reporting
he was sitting in his parked vehicle in a parking lot in the 1600 block of Smith Avenue when
another adult male, who was on foot, approached the parking lot with a gun and shot at his car,
striking it. The gunshot did not hit the reporting party, who was alone in the vehicle, but it did
strike the victim’s vehicle directly behind where he was sitting. While calling 911 for help, the
victim watched the suspect walk to a nearby house and go inside. Because the residence the
suspect went back to is just outside the city limits, the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office was asked
to respond to assist the Nampa police officers.
After talking to several individuals in the area and at the house in question, Stephan Emerson
Leslie, 51 years-old from Nampa, was taken into custody without further incident. Leslie was
charged with possession of a stolen gun, discharging a firearm into a vehicle and aggravated
assault.
This incident is still part of an ongoing investigation and there are no further threats to the
community related to this event. It is believed this incident is the result of ongoing street
racing/burn outs that have been occurring in this vicinity.
The Nampa Police Department would like to thank the members of the Canyon County Sheriff’s
Office who responded to this call to assist us with additional resources and to ensure there were
no questions about jurisdictional boundaries. Deputy Chief Curt Shankel said, “This is the type of
teamwork that Treasure Valley law enforcement agencies are able to rely on and the additional
help from CCSO in this situation was appreciated.”
