For the first time in Nampa's history, on November 7, 2023, residents within Nampa city limits will only vote for council members who live in their district as part of Idaho Code section 50-707A. Idaho Code section 50-707A requires any city in Idaho with a population of 100,000 people or more to elect their council seats by district. The City of Nampa is hosting an opportunity to help educate interested candidates and answer questions they may have on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at 4:30 p.m. within council chambers of Nampa City Hall (411 3rd Street South). The meeting will also be livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/@cityofnampapublicmeetings.
The first council seats up for election based on the new council districts will be districts 2, 4 and 6 and will be elected to four-year terms. The election for council districts 1, 3 and 5 will take place in November 2025. The City of Nampa has made a helpful website for residents and interested candidates to look up their district by address at https://bit.ly/nampadistricts.
Candidates for city elected office are required to file a declaration of candidacy specifying the office sought and affirming the individual is a qualified city elector. The candidate filing period opens at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 28, 2023 and closes on Friday, September 8, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their declaration of candidacy paperwork as soon as possible during the filing period.
Nampa Mayor Debbie Kling shared, “Serving the Nampa community as an elected official is a great privilege and responsibility. Nampa City Council members invest hours of their time above and beyond the regular and special council meetings to be equipped and prepared to make wise decisions and represent the citizens of this community. As a council member, you have an opportunity to shape the future of Nampa for years to come. I invite dedicated residents to consider serving their community in this role.”
