Our smoke detector program was implemented in 2001 to make sure our residents who are low income, elderly or unable to purchase and/or maintain, have working smoke alarms in their homes.

If you are able to purchase the alarms and/or batteries, we are more than happy to provide installation assistance.

We are able to provide alarms & batteries to residents at no charge, due to the donations we receive. The average cost/donation for a smoke alarm with batteries is $20.00. If you are unable to donate, we are still able to provide you whatever is necessary to assure you have working alarms in your home. 

If you rent your home: Landlords are required by IDAPA Code to provide working smoke alarms to tenants, prior to them moving in. It is the responsibility of the tenant to then maintain them. Please check with your landlord first if you need assistance.

Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms contribute significantly to safety of your family, by sensing smoke long before fire has had time to spread. Fire, smoke and toxic gases move swiftly and silently through a structure, reducing visibility and your ability to escape safely.

This alarm could save your life and the lives of your loved ones by providing the chance to escape in the unfortunate event of a fire. Smoke alarms detect fire by ionization or a photo electric process. Both processes are reliable. Be sure to purchase alarms with the (UL) label and approval.

Everyone should have smoke alarms in their home. If you do not have smoke alarms or are unable to care for them, the Nampa Fire Department along with help from local business partnerships and donations, offers smoke alarms for senior citizens and families in need. 

Keep Your Alarms Working:

  • Test alarms monthly.
  • Change batteries twice a year or when you change your clocks.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 7-10 years.
  • If a false alarms sounds, do not remove the battery. Fan the fumes away and/or open a window.

Placement is Critical:

  • Ceiling mounted alarms should be at least 4" from a wall.
  • Wall mounted alarms should be no less than 4" or no more than 12" from the ceiling.
  • Do not install alarms between an air duct and a door.
  • Install an alarm on EVERY floor of your home, including the basement.
  • Install them inside bedrooms, as well as outside sleeping areas (hallways)
  • Install an alarm in an area near the kitchen (dining room or hallway), not in the kitchen.


Practice Fire Escape Drills:

  • Make sure everyone can hear the smoke alarm.
  • Make a plan showing how to get out of the house in case of a fire.
  • Have at least 2 ways out of each room, especially bedrooms.
  • Have a safe meeting place outside the home.
  • Practice your escape plan at least twice a year.
