Police Officer Employment Requirements



  • No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions since the age of 18
  • No under the age of 18 adult criminal waivers
  • No undetected felony or serious misdemeanors committed by applicant since the age of 18
  • No minor misdemeanor convictions in the last 5 years or extensive minor misdemeanor history
  • No marijuana/cannabis use in the last 3 years
  • No other illicit drug use in the last 5 years
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must be a legal citizen of the United States
  • Ability to take and pass required;
    • Extensive written examination
    • Physical fitness test
      • All prospective hires for Nampa Police Department, regardless of POST Certification, must pass the standard Idaho POST physical fitness test as part of the testing process for Nampa Police Department. The full test and procedures for testing can be found here.
      • Applicants must score at least the following minimums on each of the five events;
        • Vertical jump- 14.0"
          1 minute situps- 15 reps
          Pushups- 21 reps
          300 meter run: 77.0 seconds
          1.5 mile run: 17min 17 seconds
    • Oral board evaluation
    • Extensive FBI & criminal background check
    • Polygraph examination
    • Extensive psychological examination and evaluation
    • Medical fitness examination
Preference Points will be given to those individuals who meet one of the following criteria:

  • Military experience will be accepted if the applicant’s actual duties were directly related to civil police work.
  • Sixty-four (64) college credits. College credits must be from an accredited institution and may include academic or technical courses.
  • Possession of a Level One Reserve Officer Certification from Idaho POST.
  • Enrolled in and/or completion of the Idaho POST Self-Sponsored Student Program and completion of the Basic Academy.
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English - A language fluency test will be conducted.
Nampa Police Department offers a lateral transfer program for certified officers, at a 2 for 1 years of service ratio.
( e.g. Transfers with 10 years experience with another agency plug in at NPD 5 year pay rate, rather than starting pay rate)

Police Officer Basic Training:



  • 6 week in house mini academy
  • 14 week, 4 phase field training program
  • 10 week patrol academy (Idaho P.O.S.T. Academy)
  • 40 hour annual block training
  • Quarterly firearms training and qualification

Police Dispatcher Employment Requirements



  • No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions since the age of 18
  • No under the age of 18 adult criminal waivers
  • No undetected felony or serious misdemeanors committed by applicant since the age of 18
  • No minor misdemeanor convictions in the last 5 years or extensive minor misdemeanor history
  • No marijuana/cannabis use in the last 3 years
  • No other illicit drug use in the last 5 years
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Ability to take and pass required;
    • Extensive FBI & criminal background check
    • Polygraph examination
    • Typing proficiency test- 40wpm minimum after errors with 92% accuracy overall
    • Multitasking test
    • Oral board evaluation

Dispatch Basic Training:



  • 6 month communications training program
  • 2 week basic dispatch academy (Idaho P.O.S.T Academy)
  • 1 week advanced dispatch academy (Idaho P.O.S.T. Academy)

  • No other illicit drug use in the last 5 years
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Ability to take and pass required;
    • Extensive FBI & criminal background check
    • Polygraph examination
